Summary

The homeowners of this cherished 100-year-old residence had recently moved in, drawn by the vibrant, walkable neighborhood of Avondale. However, they desired the addition of a hot tub to their garden, necessitating a design that prioritized privacy.

Zero Regrets

When we decided to renovate the garden of our 100-year-old home we initially wanted a professional designer to provide a thoughtful, appropriate, and compliant design that we could then bid out to installers.  However, in the design process, we came to realize that our project, while small in footprint, was still complex and would require a level of project management to ensure that it met our objectives, and it became a very easy decision to hire Cindy as the Project Manager. She had access to subs, and materials that we did not, and she brought a level of professionalism to the execution that we would not have been able to self-perform. Her fee was fair and well-earned. Zero regrets. Our garden is a beautiful bullseye, and Cindy is a true gem.

About the Project

Design Concept and Implementation

To address the homeowners' need for privacy while integrating a hot tub, we strategically placed the hot tub in the front yard, ensuring seclusion by planting dense layers of green Podocarpus hedges. This choice not only provided the necessary privacy but also added a lush, natural barrier that harmonized with the garden’s overall aesthetic.

The hardscaping elements were carefully chosen to reflect the historical character of the home. We sourced and laid bluestone and brick that complemented the existing architecture, ensuring continuity with the home's century-old charm. The inclusion of small retaining walls not only provided additional seating but also created intimate garden spaces that offered a sense of comfort and tranquility.

Design Elements

Privacy and Seclusion:

  • Hot Tub Placement: Positioned in the front yard for optimal privacy.
  • Green Podocarpus Hedges: Planted in layers to create a natural privacy screen.

Hardscaping:

  • Bluestone and Brick: Sourced to match the historical aesthetic of the home.
  • Small Retaining Walls: Provided extra seating and delineated garden spaces, enhancing the sense of enclosure and comfort.

Additional Features:

  • Iron Age Tree Grates: These added a unique design element, integrating functionality with visual appeal.
  • Lighting: A combination of lighting fixtures and festival lighting was installed to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, suitable for both day and night use.
  • Water Feature: A carefully selected water feature serves as a strong focal point. Its soothing sound not only adds a sensory dimension to the garden but also helps to mask the urban noise, enhancing the garden's peaceful ambiance.

Conclusion

This garden renovation successfully transformed the front yard into a private oasis, blending historical integrity with modern luxury. The thoughtful placement of the hot tub, the use of period-appropriate materials, and the integration of unique design elements have all contributed to creating a space that offers both solace and sophistication. The homeowners can now enjoy the tranquility of their garden, cocooned from the bustling city life, within their own private retreat.
